Sometimes when you are going through the exercises you do not understand the purpose of the steps you are taking, which makes it difficult to really learn anything from them. I will give it that it introduces each item and thoroughly explains each object and it's purposes (which is helpful) and it's clear the author understands the program quite well, but somehow the directions have been very lost in translation which makes it difficult for the beginning student of animation to follow. The programmers made changes to Maya and the book did not keep up with these changes. It just goes to show that you shouldn't publish a textbook on a program that hadn't been released yet. In 2012 they replaced split poly with "interactive split tool" and the book makes no mention of it.
This sounds simple enough when you read it, until you go to the program and to the mesh menu and there's absolutely no such thing as the split poly tool on the long list of items. Example: Book will say- Choose mesh split polygon tool. Some of the directions are outdated for an older program. It's difficult to understand the directions and some of the instructions are either too wordy (confusing!), incoherent, half explained or in some cases, out of order! While the introductions are quite comprehensive and informative, the exercises are just terribly described for beginners!! I used this textbook for my Maya 3D college course and let me say that it was often a NIGHTMARE. Incoherent instructions on excercises, but not completely worthless. You'll learn the Maya interface and the basics of modeling, texturing, animating, and visual effects.Ĭomputer Graphics, Image Processing, Digital Media / Video & Animation, General
